Managing Stress and Anxiety During the Coronavirus Outbreak

  • Take breaks from watching, reading, or listening to news stories, including social media. Continually hearing about the pandemic repeatedly can be upsetting, so be sure to take as many breaks from news updates as you need.

  • Make time to unwind. Working on your favorite pastimes and hobbies may help you relax and offer a much-needed distraction from the news.

  • Connect with others. Talk with people you trust about your concerns and how you are feeling. We’re all experiencing stress over the coronavirus, and it may help to open up with others.

  • Take care of your body. Try taking deep breaths, stretching, or meditating throughout the day, and eat healthy, well-balanced meals whenever you can. Exercising regularly and getting plenty of sleep will also help.

Support your children, especially if they are displaying any signs of anxiety.

There are a number of ways you can help your children cope with this crisis, including:

  • Take time to talk with your child or teen about the coronavirus outbreak. Answer questions and share facts about the virus in a way that your child or teen can understand.

  • Reassure your child or teen that they are safe. Let them know it’s okay if they feel upset and share your own anxiety-reducing practices with them.

  • Try to keep up with regular routines. If schools are closed, create a schedule for learning activities and relaxing or fun activities.
